Colorama is a Riso-printing studio with a small comic-distribution and publishing section based in the Kulturhaus ACUD in Berlin. The studio is run by Johanna Maierski.
We own a Risograph MZ970 and a set of various machines allowing us to produce a wide range of printed matter.
We are working with trustworthy binders and silk screen printers to be able to answer any kind of printing demand.
COLORAMA aims to share its craftmanship to make the process of designing, illustrating, conceptualizing, printing, binding, publishing and distributing as accessible as possible.
Since last year Colorama is hosting workshops in collaborations with universities/ artists / specific pros to expand the field of Riso into bigger perspectives. The workshops are meant to be a platform for kids and grown-ups to exchange their approaches and experiences and to losen up the process of creative output and shared authorship.
We organize workshops on a non-regular basis. If you wish to receive more information about future workshops subscribe to our newsletter or follow us on facebook.
If you want to organize a workshop with us, write to hallo@colorama.space
COLORAMA PRESS is a publishing house based in Berlin - dedicated to the collaboration, the observation and the production.
The publications feature the works of current comic-artists and an ongoing research about the means of carthography and storytelling.

Colorama Bookshelf is our online shop where we stock and sell books, posters, zines, records and other printed matter, both in our studio and online. If you wish to appear on our shelves, don't hesitate to submit us your work.
We currently have the possibility to print 14 colors. We show you here an approximation of the RGB colour and the Pantone reference.
Depending on the opacity and raster, overlaps can create a great variety of new colours.
Burgundy (221 U)
Fluorescent Pink (806 U)
Medium Blue (Reflex Blue U)
Black (Process Black U)
Green (354U)
Yellow (Process Yellow U)
Red (Warm Red U)
Purple (2597 U)
Fluo Orange (805 U)
Flat Gold (1245 U)
Blue (Process Blue U)
Teal (321 U)
Orange (021 U)
Huntergreen (342 U)
The Riso creates halftones. The higher the opacity is in your file, the bigger the dots will be.
We show you here an example of variation of opacity (100 to 10%) with a 71 lpi halftone.
The Riso MZ970 can print 2 colors in one pass on DIN A3 paper and allows a maximum print area of : 289 x 409 mm.
For full bleed designs, add a security bleed of at least 4 mm.
Final format is then :
283 x 404 mm.
Our risograph can print up to A3.
To spare masters and papers, interlock your smaller format into A3.
It is very difficult to achieve perfect back up print. Bare this in mind in your design process.
The risograph has limits of accuracy. The overlaps can be adjusted manually in the printing process but there can always be shifts. This should be taken in account in your design process.
Slight print marks can appear, especially when printing more than two layers or double sided. But these can easily be rubbed off with a rubber.
Tracks marks from the paper feeding rollers can appear, especially using heavy inking.
Keep a clear border of at least 10 mm.
----> Do not set up any text or images in this margin. You would risk to see it cut.
----> lines should not go under 0,25 pt.
Avoid inking the head of the paper. This causes the feeding marks and paper jams.
The risograph cannot print homogenous large color area. Avoid them. It also causes print marks and paper jams.
The risograph tends to lighten images. Don’t hesitate to boost the contrast.
White should be 0% and black 100%.
Go to our color section to see the color ranges according to intensities.
To check this percentage in photoshop, use the information pipette.
Riso inks aren't available in cyan or magenta. To print CMYK pictures, we replace these 2 channels with colours such as medium blue and red or fluorescent pink. We charge a fee for separating channels and preparing files.
The risograph creates halftones.
----> No need to add it in photoshop!
However you can influence the halftones by varying opacity in your file (size of the dots) and by changing the lpi, line per inch (spacing of the dots) directly on the printer.
If you don’t give us any specification, we will use the following settings:
The Risograph machine has a resolution of 600 dpi. Use this resolution for your images. 300 dpi will also work but for thin lines we recommand 600.
Saddle stiched 16 pages booklet >A4.
Saddle stiched 16 pages booklet >A5.
We accept pdf, tiff or indesign package (attach an idml file to prevent any software compatibility problem).
Add 4mm bleed on your full bleed designs. If your image isn’t full bleed, there is no need to add bleed.
Draw your crop marks always 4mm from the picture and outside of the bleed. Use a 0,25pt rule.
Send us ONE FILE PER COLOR.
It should be A3 GRAYSCALE, 600dpi PDF, TIFF or INDESIGN PACKAGE with 4mm BLEED (if full bleed design), 4/4/4/7mm MARGIN from the risograph, 10mm CLEAR BORDER and CROP MARKS.
Always send us a low definition of the final image of your design with superimposition of colors (pdf, jpeg or png). We need it as a reference and proof. We won’t start printing before we receive this file.
(Our paper stock is changing constantly so please tell us in advance which ones you would like to work with.)
Riso can only print on Din A3 or A4 uncoated paper between 60 and 300gsm.
You are welcome to bring your own paper if it respects these prescriptions.
We can also order in paper for you if you let us know in advance.

Riso means ideal in Japanese. The digital printer-duplicator a.k.a. Risograph was invented in 1986 by the Japanese compagny RISO Kagaku Corporation. Designed to be a high-volume, fast and low cost photocopier and marketed for schools, churches, prisons and political parties, the risograph reveals to have a very peculiar and unique aesthetic allowing beautiful colour overlays. It stands between screen printing and offset lithography. Using a stencil-based printing process and real inks gives riso-prints a result similar to silkscreen with beautiful bright colors.
Apart from the great cost/efficiency, the Risograph appears to have also great ecological qualities, since the inks are soy-based, the masters are made from banana paper and it produces a very minimum amount of waste.
The file is sent from a computer to the machine or directly scanned. A master is created for each color, by burning a negative image onto a waxed sheet. This master is then wrapped around a drum and ink is forced through the voids of Wthe master. The paper runs flat through the machine while the drum rotates at high speed to print each image on the paper.

Have a look at our latest releases here.
